![]() ![]() This is another really thoughtful documentary short about women excelling in sports in ways that defy cultural norms. From a cottage in remote northern Michigan - which was increasingly filled with computers, machines, satellites and wires - Shepherd would broadcast music millions of miles into space (he decided aliens would probably respond to Afrobeat, jazz, reggae records as a kind of universal language).Īfter spending much of his life with his head in the stars, Shepherd's attention is brought back to Earth after making a different kind of connection in his own community. In this documentary short, which debuted on Netflix in August, director Matthew Killip tells the story of John Shepherd, a man who spent 30 years and tens of thousands of dollars trying to contact aliens. "John Was Trying to Contact Aliens" - 16 mins. Here are some of my favorites that I've discovered. ![]() Netflix has a ton of options that are under an hour long, with an expanse of topics - space travel, sumo wrestling, and speedcubing. Earlier this year, I used this as an opportunity to explore all the great sketch comedy options that were available to stream, but recently I've expanded my media diet to include short, upbeat documentaries. There are times, especially at the end of a workday, where my attention span is just shot. There's a simple explanation for this, and Corinne Purtill put it quite succinctly for the New York Times: "Stress, like a pandemic, puts our brains into 'fight or flight' mode, disrupting attention, memory, breathing and sleep." This movie might unsettle you if you have a deep fear of the ocean.Īt times, The Deepest Breath can be quite heavy and somber in tone, especially given its subject matter, but it also spends time exploring Zecchini and Keenan’s victories and the highs of the sport that kept them going. It's been a year of some pretty spectacular documentaries - from HBO's revealing sports and mental health documentary "The Weight of Gold," to Netflix's inspiring Paralympics Games doc "Rising Phoenix," to the heartfelt "A Secret Love."īut, as I've written about before, I've developed something that I call "quarantine brain." It's kind of like being on a heavy dose of cold medicine while also taking an hourly shot of espresso mentally dull with some spikes of anxiety. It uses archival footage, interviews, and clips of actual freediving to create an atmospheric film that sometimes feels like a tense thriller. ![]() This doc delves into their relationship and the risky nature of freediving overall. But then tragedy struck, and Keenan lost his life while saving Zecchini on a dive gone wrong off the coast of Egypt. With Keenan by her side, Zecchini aimed to break the world record for freediving. ![]() Zecchini and Keenan seemed fated to meet, forming a near-immediate emotional bond throughout their years working together. The Deepest Breath focuses on Italian freediver Alessia Zecchini and her safety expert Stephen Keenan. Divers must depend on their physical strength and lung capacity alone to descend into the watery depths and resurface. The doc takes us into the exciting world of freediving, an extreme sport relying on deep dives into the ocean without using any scuba gear or equipment. The Deepest Breath is an acclaimed A24 documentary that arrived on Netflix in July.
